Letter from Editor Kulchytsky

By Darien Kulchytsky ‘21

It’s pretty scary to know how quickly time flies. I remember it as just yesterday when
I took my last final on May 23, but looking back now, I realize it has been 4 months. For me, summer consisted of a blur of exciting activities, which included canoeing on Lake George, camping on Raystown Lake, and learning to become a camp counselor. Looking back on those memories, I am reminded of a quote from Dr. Seuss: “Do not cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” Though I will miss the sum- mer, I will cherish the memories gained and look forward to the future.

Now I know summer passed too quickly for all of us, but I, for one, am excited for the year ahead. Let me introduce myself. My name is Darien Kulchytsky, and I am a junior at Saint Ignatius. This year, I am the Editor-in-Chief of our newspaper, The Eye. I originally began working for The Eye as a sophomore, editing articles as well as writ- ing them. I also created the puzzles on the Back Page last year, such as the Freshman Teachers Crossword, Christmas Quotes Jumble, and the Scavenger Hunt. Other than The Eye, my extracurricular activities include WildFlats, Harlequins, Ukrainian folk dancing and Ukrainian Scouts.

Now that you’ve gotten to know me, I want everyone to know that helping spread the news around campus is a very important job to me. I will take it upon myself, along with my co-editor, to get issues out in a timely fashion with enjoyable content. As Yoda said, “Do. Or do not. There is no try.” I promise you that I will do my job to the best of my ability, and will make sure that this year will be, as Borat would say, a “great success!”

The Common Period: Common sense or common pain?

By ZACHARY DITZEL ‘22

The common period schedule, a common occurrence here at Saint Ignatius, is something much loved by some and fervently despised by others. In my opinion, the common period is something that brings more benefits than downsides.

One of the downsides can be clearly seen in the delayed start on Friday the 6th. Certain classes were required to come to school early to complete an activity that would normally take place during a common period. Without the common period, we might be forced to stay late after school or come in early in order to complete the various activities during a common period.

However, the common period isn’t without flaws. The long interruption it creates during the day can make the day feel as if it is dragging on forever. On the other hand, the common period also does manage to break up the weekly grind by adding a special day of shortened classes to the week, which is always appreciated. The common period is something always highly anticipated and coveted here at Saint Ignatius, and in my opinion, it is one of the many positives of attending this school.

Featured Club: ASTRA, the Aerospace Club

By Ferenc Somogyi ‘21

A passion for the future drives this club forward. A desire to understand and experience the unknown permeates its members. For ASTRA, the Saint Ignatius Aerospace Club, the sky is only the beginning.

Started last February by three current juniors – Ferenc Somogyi ’21, Managing Director, Luke Chesney ’21, Director of Internal Affairs, and Connor Hack ’21, Director of External Affairs – the aerospace club seeks to teach and inspire a love for air and space in Saint Ignatius students. In fact, the name of the club, ASTRA, means “star” in Latin and symbolizes the final frontier which the club wishes to explore.

This year, ASTRA plans to host a variety of activities and seminars for its members. These include hands-on aerospace themed lab, engineering, and science activities, visiting aerospace facilities in and around Cleveland, hearing from aerospace professionals, and working on aerospace projects and research with those in the field. Important to the club is to cover all parts of aerospace,
including aeronautics, astronautics, astronomy, astrophysics, and space biology and chemistry. Under the direction of longtime AP Physics teacher Mr. Jerry DeCarlo, the club hopes to apply academic concepts to real-world, enjoyable aerospace applications. At the first practical meeting of club on Thursday, September 5, for example, the club used flight simulators, designed paper airplanes, and discussed the forces of flight and other basic aeronautics.

The club meets on Thursdays after school in room 101 from 3:00 to 4:00 pm. All grade levels are welcome to attend. Contact the above students or Mr. DeCarlo for details. Come explore the stars with ASTRA!
