Cutting Down the Nets: Time for the party to start as 68 teams prepare for the madness of March

Are you ready?

“March Madness” is a coined term that refers to the pandemonium and high intensity in the NCAA Tournament. Those two words may not be enough to describe what th2013 edition of the tournament could be. The top four overall seeds in the tournament, Louisville (29-5), Kansas (29-5), Indiana (27-6), and Gonzaga (31-2), lead the way  in the 68-team field. All of them have had their many highs, with conference tournament championships for Louisville, Kansas, and Gonzaga, and the regular Big Ten season champs in Indiana. The top seed in the tournament is coveted, as these four will be hunted on the dance floor. Gonzaga has only gotten as far as the Elite Eight (1999), whereas Kansas, Louisville, and Indiana have combined for 31 final four appearances. In the grand scheme of things, I thought that the committee did a solid job with the selecting. Although their schedule wasn’t the toughest of the bunch by any means, the Bulldogs of Gonzaga still went undefeated in their conference. Ironically, their two losses come to two teams who were ranked #13 in both match-ups going into the (Dec. 8 vs. Illinois, Jan. 19 vs. Butler). Out of the four #1 seeds, I feel that the Midwest is really tough, but that the Cards of Louisville had a turning point in the Big East Tournament Championship.

Student Senate Statement: Paul Haddad and Joe Mazhuvanchery

by Jack Cotton '14

In order to help the student body make an informed choice, The Eye offered the two final candidate slate a space to make a statement about their ticket. What follows is Paul Haddad and Joe Mazhuvanchery’s unedited statement.

Men of Ignatius,

I am running to be your student body president for a special reason; TO MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD! Carlos ‘El Presidente’ did a fantastic job and set a very high bar, but let’s go even higher.

My vice-presidential running mate is Joe Mazhuvanchery. Together we have 4 years of service on the Student Senate. We are taking this campaign very seriously because we know that we can ensure all of you, our brothers, a year of high school that will be cherished forever.

Now, we can’t promise homecoming or winter formal themes, but as I said in my speech – they WILL be off the chain! Students have already suggested ideas such as LED laser beams and fog lights. These are just the little stuff to us, so imagine what the big things are that we have in stock for you!

This year our student section was amazing! However, we plan on making a few additions. First, let’s get the student section even rowdier! Second, let’s give a lot more attention and recognition to the arts. What about the students that participate in speech, debate, Science Olympiad, JCWA, and other academic related activities our school offers? I firmly believe we must stand up and show the world that St. Ignatius is not only a football powerhouse, but also a place where young men can grow and thrive in all aspects of life; Mentally, Physically, and Spiritually. Academics are important, but it is also important for people to find their calling in life and be recognized for the hard work they do, just as our athletes work hard to reach their accomplishments. We are one united student body.

We want to be the voice of the little man. We want every student at Wildcat High to feel that they contributed to this prestigious establishment. That is all.

But wait, there’s more. Suggestion boxes will be placed throughout the campus if we are elected. You can write a note to us with ANY suggestion you have for OUR alma mater. As always, you can e-mail, Facebook message, Snapchat, or tweet us.

Men, we are willing to do the work for you. Our ambition is on another level. We are striving for history to be made in the 2013-2014 school year! The amount of will-power we have to make the next school year epic is incomparable and we genuinely mean that.

Therefore, cast your vote with confidence and vote for Paul Haddad & Joe Mazhuvanchery. You want it, we got it.

Sincerely,

Paul Haddad & Joe Mazhuvanchery

Student Senate Statement: Michael Zupan and Owen Manning

In order to help the student body make an informed choice, The Eye offered the two final candidate slate a space to make a statement about their ticket. What follows is Michael Zupan and Owen Manning’s unedited statement.

ZUPANNING

(Zupan Manning)

Men of Ignatius!

As you heard Monday, my name is Michael Zupan. I’m currently, thanks to each and every one of your votes, still in the running for next year’s student body president. We had a great turnout today. I was very well pleased.

I appreciate all you guys voting today and showing you care about what happens next year. It shows a deeper involvement in the school and pride for what we do here. (Perhaps, enough to run for office?) Owen and I, despite all the fun and games that surround the elections, are very serious about holding office to represent you next year. We have represented you for several years thus far, and have gained invaluable experience in Senate that can’t be offered by any other group at St. Ignatius. Our experience and our dedication has brought us before you now, and you asked us to continue on in this race, and with a little luck, take the presidency for next school year.

There are a lot of jobs involved with being president. But, as Mr. Howard’s favorite line says, “Politicians often get stuck inside the beltway, and forget those who put them in office.” I do not consider myself a politician by any means. But, you are my constituents with whom I have the pleasure of serving our school and our community. We won’t forget those who put us in office, and we won’t just sit on our throne above everyone else. I firmly intend to keep every single one of you, minus my little brother, in consideration, and will always take any idea you bring to me seriously. That is my promise to you.

So, Men, don’t be that guy,
Don’t vote for politicians that cheat and lie,
There are still good ones out there, despite what they say,
And we won’t let problems get in our way.

So depending on what you may have been planning,
I really encourage you to vote Zupan-Manning,
the Duo with hard work, dedication, and skill,
All that we can do, we certainly will.

Get out there tomorrow and vote Wildcats.

P.S.– No promises, but this whole logo thing will be our first priority.

Finally, a quick letter from Owen, my Vice.

Hello guys.

First off, we’d just like to thank all of you for the great voter turnout today. Thanks for taking the time and showing that you care about the leadership in our great school. Hopefully you guys can do the same thing for the final election on Wednesday. Thank you to Russ, Pete, Jack, Ricky, Paul, and Joe for making running in this race such a great experience, and congratulations to Paul and Joe for making it to the final election.  We appreciate your decision to send us through to the next stage, and we promise that you made the right choice in voting Zupan-Manning. Our experience on Senate, especially our experience from this year, is one of the most important reasons you guys should consider us. We’re very familiar with the procedures and accomplishments this year’s Senate has made, and we know what things we want to improve and what things we want to keep the same next year. This is not the time to change things up; it’s the right move keeping us in Senate and selecting us as the leaders of the school.

Yours Always,

Owen Manning ’14
Junior Class Vice President

Cutting Down the Nets: Selection Sunday arrives as teams wait in suspense; Ohio State-Wisconsin battle for the Big Ten

It’s one of the great days in the college basketball season, as 68 teams will receive invitations to the dance. Bubble teams look to see what happens with their fate, as breaths will be held at 6 pm tonight. Four conference championship games take place, as an eventful championship week wraps up. To view every single conference tournament winner, a great page of every winner is at http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/feature/index?page=champweek2013.

The brackets will be flying off the printers tonight, as if Saint Patrick’s Day festivities aren’t enough to celebrate! Memories of the tournament fill my mind of Saint Patrick’s Day tournament games. Before going over the championship games in conference tournaments today, here is one such memory. It was the second round of the tournament in 2007, when Ohio State and Xavier squared off. Ron Lewis sent the game into overtime after hitting a triple (which made it 62-62), and the Bucks would go on to win, 78-71. What a game it was on Saint Patrick’s Day of ’07.

Cutting Down the Nets: An eventful Friday displays statement wins by pressured teams; Championship Saturday arrives

The dust is beginning to clear for the NCAA Tournament Committee, but in this process, not everybody is going to be happy. Three teams were knocked off on Friday, as #2 Duke, #5 Georgetown, and #6 Michigan all fell in their respective conference tournaments. Some bubble teams made big-time statements, as Maryland upset Duke, while others fell. For Kentucky, the Wildcats were looking to put up a strong performance against Vanderbilt. Coach Calipari ran out of answers for the Commodores, as UK fell, 64-48. Kentucky’s tournament hopes have definitely gone down, as the Wildcats will most likely be just out of the field at 21-11.

Pi Day contest has students merging mathematics and competitive eating

by Joseph Kollin ‘14

The much anticipated Pi Day and all the excitement associated with it finally arrived at Saint Ignatius’ doorstep Thursday. Among the array of events the Math Department prepared, perhaps the most anticipated was the pizza pie eating contest. During fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh period, students assembled on the stage in Rade Dining Hall to face off and claim the prestige and prizes accompanying the pie eating contest.

Jimmy Byrne ’14 starting off his team in the relay. Byrne would go on to disqualify his team after leaving a morsel of his crust on the plate and refusing to consume any more.

The pie eating contest featured teams of four students each given two pieces of pizza to devour in as little time as possible. However, only one of the students was allowed to eat at a time. After the first student finished, the second could begin. Time for an individual’s consumption of the pizza ranged from one minute all the way to five and established some students as strong stomached and others as picky eaters. The winners of the fourth period event, Michael Cera ’15, Cameron Tolbert ’15, Ewan Johnson ’16, and Michael Penn ’15, all recounted the contest saying, “It’s not as easy as it looks. It takes a strong stomach and an iron will.”

At the end of the day, the winners of each period received a free pie, and the overall victors received gift certificates to the cafeteria. All in all, winners and losers had a great time participating in the Pi Day festivities and enjoyed the opportunity to finally be rewarded for eating pizza.

Blessing of the boats opens Spring season for the Wildcat Navy

by Colin McDowell ‘13

A crisp, sunny Saturday morning on the Cuyahoga–the type of day the Wildcat Navy looks forward to in early spring–served as the backdrop for the team’s rite of passage. No, the Navy wasn’t practicing on the river just yet. To kick off the varsity season, the Saint Ignatius Crew had their annual Blessing of the Boats, led by Fr. Frank Canfield, S.J. The blessing took place in the late morning at the Cleveland Rowing Foundation boathouse followed by a social where both the Saint Ignatius and Saint Joseph Academy Crews enjoyed camaraderie and good food.

The blessing was short and sweet, with both Saint Ignatius and Saint Joseph rowing communities offering a prayer over the boats for safe and fast races, for the teams for perseverance and strength, and for each rower to work to the best of his or her ability.

Coach Patrick Connor ’94, Saint Ignatius’ head coach, followed up the blessing with a special announcement that not only pleasantly surprised our rowers, but, Fr. Canfield as well. In honor of Fr. Canfield’s dedication to the Jesuit community, to the young men of this fine institution and his selfless, compassionate acts towards the brethren in the surrounding neighborhood, the Wildcat Navy named the newest addition to their fleet, a 63ft Vespoli shell, after him. Ever humble and witty, Fr. Canfield tempered his astonished reaction to the news, wishing the oarsmen the best of luck in the upcoming season and that those rowing his boat would not sink to the bottom of the river.

Luckily, the Saint Ignatius Crew has just the opposite in mind for this new boat, and they have even more confidence knowing that he’ll be right there with them in spirit.

Conference Tournaments Roll on Friday for Those Still Remaining as NCAA Tournament Committee Watches

by John Fanta ’13

The Big Ten, SEC, ACC, and Atlantic 10 Quarterfinals take place on Friday, while the Big East, Pac-12, Big 12, and MAC forge ahead into the Semifinals of their conference championship tournaments. Ah, March Madness! Where the cubicle laptop is so tempting to turn into a TV screen instead of an Excel template. Where the history movie in afternoon class is appetizing to turn to Jim Nantz on CBS. The Big Dance does not start until next week, but many teams are still trying to make their final cases for seeding in the NCAA Tournament, while other squads are just trying to squeak in to the field by showing the tournament committee what they are made of for the dance. It’s only heating up on Friday in the conference championships, as Thursday brought thrilling games that went down to the last second. In one such game, we saw a team lead by three with five seconds to go, and end up giving up eight straight points in those five seconds to lose. We also saw the Big Ten Tournament get started with a bang, as a buzzer beater got everybody jumping at the United Center. We give you one highlighted game and quick recaps of the others from each conference.

Saint Ignatius celebrates election of first ever Jesuit pope, Jorge Mario Bergoglio

by John Fanta ’13

The first ever Jesuit pontiff, Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina, has become Pope Francis. He is the first pope in the modern era from outside Europe. A man who majored in chemistry, Francis is quite intellectual. He has been a cardinal since 2001, as he has served as the president of the Argentine Bishops Conference from 2005-2011.

Jesuit institutions all around the world are celebrating the first ever Jesuit pope, as Saint Ignatius men celebrated throughout the afternoon. At 2:06 pm eastern time, white smoke was bellowing out of the Sistine Chapel in Rome, signaling that a pope had been elected. About halfway through 9th period in the school day, the announcement on the PA came on with the words “Habemus Papam,” which means “we have a pope” in Latin. Immediately, the 1400+ students, faculty, and staff filed down to just outside of Saint Mary of the Assumption Chapel. Father Frank Canfield, SJ led a prayer service to celebrate the day of hope and excitement in the Catholic Church. It was 2:45 pm eastern time when everyone began to file back to classrooms, as the real celebration was just beginning. Just a little after 3 pm, the whole senior lounge was packed, with a standing-room only crowd. Everyone was watching and waiting for the big announcement. Cheers were heard from the men and campus ministers when a Jesuit was announced.

As Anthony Ertle ’13 put it, “This is an exciting day for the Catholic Church, and it’s one that gives us hope for the future. It’s really a great day for us Catholics.” Mr. Ed DeVenney, Saint Ignatius Campus Minister, was sitting right near me throughout all of the TV coverage. “What an awesome day it truly is. It is important that we gather outside the chapel and pray,” he said.

Yes, the Catholic Church has had its tough days with a decrease in those wanting to enter into the priesthood. A day like this can put a smile on our faces as Catholics. It’s a day to be proud. It’s a day to look forward in the Catholic Church.

Cutting Down the Nets: Three teams claim automatic bids Tuesday; Big East tournament starts at Madison Square Garden

Two of the three teams who won their conference tournament titles are both ones that I know I will be keeping my eye on when the bracket comes out for the Big Dance. Let’s look at Tuesday’s action as there are 13 squads in the tournament automatically now. On Wednesday, four Big East Tournament games comes at you on the ESPN family of networks, the MAC gets going as Quicken Loans Arena action begins,  and Championship Week continues to heat up.
