Class competition sets the stage for the Magic: The Gathering tournaments Friday

by Brandon Borges ‘15

Not only is May 17th the day of the huge Field Day for the Class Competition, but it is also the day of two Magic: The Gathering tournaments at Ignatius. There will be the annual Sealed Draft with last year’s seniors, and the tournament for Class Competition points. Between the high stakes competitions and the excited competitors, this is the most anticipated Magic: The Gathering event of the entire year.

The first tournament will be the Field Day tournament, where one student from each grade level will compete for points for the Class Competition. The freshman representative, Eliot Oreskovic, said to me, “It’d be a party.” When asked about his improper speech, he said, “Just leave it.” Oreskovic will be joined by sophomore representative Matthew Barto, junior Raphael Dean, and senior Anyun Chatterjee. All four representatives are very skilled and have an extensive background when it comes to the card game, so this will be a stellar competition.

The second tournament will be the Sealed Draft, and the most anticipated draft of the year at Ignatius at that. Not only will this draft include almost every Magic: The Gathering club member this year, but it will also have last year’s seniors that were also in the Magic: The Gathering club when they were Ignatians. For $25, participants will receive 9 Dragon’s Maze booster packs, and with the cards in these packs along with any basic land cards they need, they will construct a deck consisting of at least 40 cards with which they will go against any other participant determined by the randomizer. The winner of the last sealed draft was Jackson Lynn. When asked about his confidence going into this draft, he said, “I know what types of decks work now, but the cards you get are random, so I don’t know.”

Lastly, the president of the Magic: The Gathering club currently, Jake Biesiada, will give his position to the next president, Giovanni Valentino. When asked about his experience being president, Biesiada said, “It teaches leadership skills. It’s like herding cats.” When asked about choosing Valentino for the new president, Biesiada said, “I want to watch this club burn. Having said that, Gio’s capable, but I am the best there was,” and Valentino said, “Being in this club for 4 years, it’s really an honor.”

Mark May 17th on your calendars, everybody, because that is when sparks will fly in more ways than one.

Saint Ignatius Crew rows to a 2nd place finish at Midwest Invitational

The Wildcat Navy take home the runner-up trophy from Zanesville after a hard-fought weekend.

by John Fanta ’13

Coach Pat Connor’s Wildcat rowers knew that it was going to be a tough road in Zanesville when they took to Dillon Lake in the jam-packed, 48-team tournament. It was the largest field ever, as teams come from a combined seven countries with 500 boats entirely.

Saint Ignatius’ strength and teamwork powered the Wildcats to a 2nd place finish, behind Illinois school New Trier. The highlight of the day was the 1st place finish for the Novice Lightweight 4+ boat, as the ‘Cats came from behind and powered by their competitors. The Junior 4 boat also took home their race title in a thriller. Congrats to those two title winners.

Here are more results from the Midwest Invitational. All races have six competitors:

  • LWT8 boat took 5th place.
  • The J8, 2V, and 3V boats garnered 4th place.
  • The V4+, VLWT4+, F8, V2-, V8 boats all took 3rd place in the finals.

Vista continues to drive and showcase the arts at Ignatius

By Bradley Merk ‘14

The arts at Ignatius have a tendency to not be fully initiated into the school-wide environment. There are an abundance of varying talents here including writers, painters, musicians, and photographers who may not be given the attention their respective creativity deserves. Still, it’s an undeniable truth that there are  many unique voices here at Saint Ignatius that should be heard. A perfect display of campus talent is available in the school magazine, Vista.

The issue for Vista as of now seems to be public awareness. It can be all too easy to try and initiate a conversation about Vista and receive in response, “I have no idea what you are talking about.” This is going to change now.

Vista is a literary arts magazine which can feature any sort of prominent art form that will fit on the pages. Poems, drawings, photos, paintings, short stories, and graphic designs–it’s all in there. As the Editor-in-Chief of Vista, Colin McDowell ‘13 explains, “Vista’s mission is to publish and display the authentic and creative works of Saint Ignatius students.” Speaking to the number of submissions, Colin says, “It’s truly inspiring to see the overwhelming number of submissions we receive each year. It not only reflects the individual student’s love of art, but this institutions promotion and development of artistic ability as well.”

Vista has previously been located in more discrete locations (possibly avoiding the “mainstream”) but when the new print issue is released before the end of the school year, Nicholas Labate ‘13 elucidates, “We’re hoping to place [the issues] in more “visible” spots (like around the library, in the senior lounge, Rade, etc). We also plan on putting a few issues around Ohio City.”

The future also looks bright for Vista. As a growing community, Vista is hoping for more students to submit their work and collaborate with all art clubs and groups on campus. They also encourage students to take a chance by participating in other art activities available at Saint Ignatius such as plays, musicals, choir, or submitting several of their works into the annual art show.

Vista meets on Mondays on the English floor. Its 10 committed members are willing to help students expand their level of artistic talent and ensure others that the arts are nothing to be intimidated by in the Saint Ignatius community.

Read the new issue before it hits the streets.

For first time ever, Saint Ignatius volleyball wins at St. Edward with a 3-1 triumph

Saint Ignatius Volleyball’s troubles at the Eagles’ Nest were not present tonight, and it was because of senior leaders.

by John Fanta ’13

After falling to the St. Edward Eagles on April 19 at Sullivan Gym, Coach Casey Marcelo and his team went back to the drawing board and came ready when they saw their foe again on April 27 at the Centerville Elite Eight Invitational  The ‘Cats fought off St. Edward, 3-2, in a back-and-forth affair. The Wildcats took something from that game, as many spectators and media did as well. Coming in at #4 in the state tonight, Saint Ignatius was ready for a big showdown with the end of the regular season upon us versus St. Edward at the Eagles’ Nest. The Wildcats still had some revenge in mind after falling on their home court to the Eagles.

The tone would be set by Casey Marcelo and his squad. It was a true leader, Jeff Granger, who stepped up to lead Saint Ignatius past St. Edward, 3-1. Early in the first set, it was 9-9 in Lakewood, but Granger’s three kills had Saint Ignatius with an established force. The Wildcats went on to win the first set, 25-19. St. Ed’s would not be denied in the second set, as they would answer with a 25-18 triumph. Then, lengthy Jeff Granger and Tim Hollis both led the ‘Cats to a 25-17 victory in the third set.

After starting the fourth set up 6-0, Coach Casey Marcelo’s team showed why they are #4 in Ohio. Jeff Granger had three aces early and ended up having the kill to end the game with a 25-16 set win.

The regular season concludes on Thursday with the Wildcats hosting Andrews Osborne at a little after 7 pm.

SIBN: The Saint Ignatius Broadcasting Network will have coverage from Sullivan Gym as this will be a late addition to our schedule. Wildcats and Osborne show down on Thursday at West 30th and Lorain. What a win for Casey Marcelo and his team to cherish tonight, as they take two of three on the regular season from their rival, the Eagles of St. Edward.

Look at the posts below about more news regarding postseason info, etc.

Wildcat Rugby ranked 18th in the nation

In their first season as an OHSAA-sanctioned sport, the Ignatius rugby team has made quite an impression.

After upsetting crosstown rival St. Edward 10-8 in the final, the ‘Cats almost succeeded in knocking off the #4 team in the nation, Penn (Indiana) in a 27-22 thriller.

The strong showing at the eight state Midwest Championships propelled the previously unranked ‘Cats to 18th in the nation. St. Edward (Lakewood) dropped to 24th.

Saint Ignatius Spring sports squads showing promise as postseason pressure looms

By John Fanta ‘13

Whether it’s the diamond, field, courts, or track, Saint Ignatius athletics have been very successful this spring sports season. The regular season is near its conclusion, which means playoffs are on the way.

With seven of the sixteen varsity sports at Saint Ignatius High School being offered this season, it’s certainly been busy. But it’s been a good busy, because the winning has certainly been present. As the final season of my time at Saint Ignatius is into May, here’s hoping we have some memories to cherish together.

Coach Brad Ganor’s Saint Ignatius baseball team concluded the 2013 Ohio Jesuit Tournament with a contest with Saint John. The Wildcats, who came in still having a shot to win the tournament at 1-1, sent Tom Rolle to the mound at Classic Park for the Sunday afternoon affair with the Titans. Although Saint John’s came in at 0-2 on the tournament, they were ever-so-hungry to get out of Lake County with a win on their weekend.

Rolle, who is the Wildcats’ ace, was working like a machine early. After their nine-game winning streak was snapped the previous night by Saint Xavier, Coach Brad Ganor was looking for a special Sunday at the OJT.

Saint John’s came out very aggressive in the first few innings, but it would be a Sunday that would calm down until the 6th inning. A 5-run 6th inning led the Wildcats to a 7-2 triumph over Saint John’s, as Rolle threw those six innings and MJ Nara earned the save. Dan Rowbottom’s 2-run single in the 6th charged the ‘Cats into a big inning, as that would suck the life out of the now 12-5 Titans. Saint Ignatius finished in a three-way tie with Saint Xavier and Walsh Jesuit for the Ohio Jesuit Tournament Title. The Wildcats received good news from the OHSAA seed meetings for the Strongsville Sectional/District, as they stand at the #2-seed. Brecksville-Broadview Heights (22-1) is at the top seed and Strongsville stands at the #3-seed. For the bracket, go to  http://brackets.ohsaa.org/bracket.aspx?t=4026&ts=9128&not=13.

The Wildcats go up against NDCL on Wednesday, Stow on Thursday, Lakewood on Friday, and St. Edward on Saturday. Go to Ignatius.edu/baseball for team info.

James Norris ran a 22.48-second 200 meter dash to win, while Kevin Kavalec took first in shot put (57-05.00) to lead Saint Ignatius Track and Field to a 3rd place finish at the Gary Smith Invitational. The Wildcats had finished first in their two previous invitationals, with wins at the Amherst Comet Relays and the Miele Invitational. If you have not seen freshman James Norris yet, you need to (if you can catch him with your eyes). The freshman won both the 100 (11.09) and 200 meter (22.73) dashes at the Miele Invitational just a few weeks ago at Gilmour.

More Results from Gary Smith Invitational (3rd Place Team Finish)

  • James Norris, first place in the 200 meter dash, 22.48.
  • Kevin Kavalec, first place in the shot put, 57-05.00.
  • Kevin Kavalec, second in the discus, 157-11.
  • Jack Miller, second in the 3200 meter run, 9:49.21.
  • Matt McVey, second in the 110 meter hurdles, 15.45.
  • Pat Politowicz, second in the pole vault, 13-08.25.
  • Luke Wagner, second in the 1600 meter run, 4:34.00.
  • Pat Jeffries, third in the 300 meter hurdles, 40.14.
  • Joe Arquillo, fourth in the 800 meter run, 2:00.58.
  • Mike Zupan, fourth in the high jump, 6-02.00.
  • Corey Griffith, fourth in the discus, 139-10.
  • A second place in the 4×100 meter relay, 43.45 – Mike Zupan, Pat Jeffries, Dan Way and James Norris.
  • A second place in the 4×1600 meter relay, 19:01.29 – Sean Sovacool, John Nemes, Tim Trentel, Tom Sullivan.
  • A second place in the 4×800 meter relay, 8:05.91 – Luke Wagner, Jake Maier, Jack Fitzgerald and Joe Arquillo.
  • A fourth place in 4×200 meter relay, 1:33.66 – Quin Lawless, Nick Cristescu, Ray O’Brien and Mike Schafer.

The Euclid Relays are Friday at 3:30 pm, as the District Meet at Lakewood High School is looming. It will begin on Wednesday, May  22nd and conclude on Friday, May 24th. The full schedule is at Ignatius.edu/trackandfield. Check out Coach Chuck Kyle’s team.

The Saint Ignatius Lacrosse team won their fourth straight game on Saturday, as they exploded for a big day offensively early and often. It has been a very strong year for Coach Pat McManamon and his team, as the ‘Cats crushed St. Charles Prep, 13-4. On Wednesday, Westlake comes to Wasmer Field for a 7:30 encounter. On Saturday, Hampton (Pennsylvania) meets Saint Ignatius at Hawken High School at 3 pm. The Wildcats are 10-1 and are forging towards the playoffs with full force.

After taking second in the Midwest Invitational in Indiana, Coach Dan Arbeznik’s Saint Ignatius Rugby Program has earned a great reward. The Wildcats took down previously #18 in the country, Notre Dame La Salette, 12-5, but that was only the beginning. Standing at #8 in the country, the St. Edward Eagles came into Indiana seeking to win the Midwest Championship, but the ‘Cats won on a game-winning 38-yard kick, 10-8. With that loss, the Eagles fell back to #24 in the nation. The Wildcats did lose their lead in the final minute of the championship game and fell short of Penn, 27-24, but they almost knocked off the #6-ranked team in the rugbymag.com rankings.

Saint Ignatius was rewarded, as they garner the 18th ranking in the top 25. For the full rankings, go to http://www.rugbymag.com/index.php/boys-high-school/7975-boys-hs-club-top-25-may-6-2013-presented-by-selective-service.html. The Wildcats visit Hudson on Friday night, but they certainly hould cherish this moment, as they are the top team in the rankings from Ohio.

Congrats to Dan Arbeznik and the program.

Ranked 10th in Ohio, Saint Ignatius Tennis edged Massillon Jackson, 3-2, for their ninth straight match victory. The Wildcats have sectional play beginning next week, as they host Hudson on Tuesday and head to Western Reserve for a road match on Wednesday.

What a fantastic achievement it is for Saint Ignatius Volleyball, as Casey Marcelo’s program is ranked 4th in the Ohio High School Boys Volleyball Association’s Rankings. The 12-4 ‘Cats are behind Beavercreek, Hilliard Darby, and Archbishop Moeller.

Here is the poll:

Rank – Team – Poll points

1. – Archbishop Moeller – 198
 2. – Hilliard Darby – 188
3. – Beavercreek – 148
4. – St. Ignatius – 117
5. – Elder – 111

The 12-4 volleyball team wraps up the regular season this week against St. Edward (Tuesday May 7th) Andrews Osborne Academy (Thursday May 9th). Postseason play begins with the district tournament May 10-14.

The Saint Ignatius Crew Team rows in the prestigious Midwest Championships on May 10-12 at Dillon Lake in Zanesville. It is the largest Midwest Championship Regatta in history, with seven countries being represented (48 teams, over 500 boats). The sculling teams won their first-ever gold medal this past week at the St. Mary’s Invitational. Good luck to Coach Pat Connor and his team this upcoming weekend.

Saint Ignatius baseball splits day one at the tough, entertaining Ohio Jesuit Tournament

The four teams gathered for Sunday mass led by Father Bill Murphy. This is what it’s all about. AMDG

EASTLAKE – Saint Ignatius, Saint John, Walsh Jesuit, and Saint Xavier began a tournament that is held special to all four schools in their respective baseball seasons. On the first weekend of May, the four convene every year for the Ohio Jesuit Tournament. With not even two weeks before playoff time remaining, the tournament is a great test for all four squads. Riding an 8-game winning streak coming into the tournament, Coach Brad Ganor and Saint Ignatius were more than ready for play to begin.

Game 1: Trailing 4-0 heading into the bottom of the 7th, it would take magic for Saint Ignatius. In one of the great games in Ohio Jesuit Tournament history and regular season OHSAA history, the ‘Cats came back to rally and topple the Walsh Jesuit Warriors, 5-4. After Quillen Austria hit a game-tying double in which the possible game-winning runner, Bennett Kinzel, was thrown out at the plate, Saint Ignatius’ big 1st baseman, Joe Khoury, ripped a walk-off frozen rope into right field. A mob scene at first base followed, as a game that was 0-0 heading into the 7th took a wild turn to get the tournament started. It was Saint Ignatius’ first Ohio Jesuit tournament win since 2010, and what a triumph it was!

Game 2: Walsh Jesuit answered from the opening loss with a 3-2 win in a pitcher’s duel to edge Saint John Jesuit.

Game 3: Saint Xavier drew 14 walks in a rout of Saint John in 5 innings, 14-2 (run-rule game)

Game 4: Saint Ignatius and Saint Xavier finished the day with the primetime affair under the ClassicPark lights. Both teams came in at 1-0 on the tournament. Matt Lynch, the Wildcats’ starter, struggled early. The Bombers put up four runs in the first and took control early. Throughout the night at ClassicPark, the ‘Cats did have chances though.

Despite the rallying attempts, the Bombers wore away the Wildcats’ 9-game winning streak with a 6-3 victory. Insurance runs along the way for the team from Cincinnati powered them by the team from Ohio City.

Two games are on tap today to conclude the tournament play. Saint Ignatius will take on Saint John Jesuit, as both squads are looking to bounce back at 12:30 pm at ClassicPark. The Saint Ignatius Broadcast Network has coverage with live video. Walsh Jesuit plays host to Saint Xavier at 12:30 pm.

Draw Day!

Saint Ignatius will receive their Strongsville District draw this Sunday afternoon, as the ‘Cats will see where they stand for postseason play.

Tune in this afternoon! Send me your tweets @JohnFanta13 and e-mail at [email protected].

All-school emails: blessing or curse?

by Brandon Borges ‘15

At face value, the idea of an email network where students can share ideas between the entire school seems like a good idea. This not only makes getting the word out about clubs, surveys, and lost items easier, but it also connects the Saint Ignatius community on a level that speaks to a 21st century generation. Be that as it may, there is also the presence of jokers who think that by sending emails about lost pencils, bouncy ball clubs, and the like using another student’s email address–often due to unattended mobile devices or logged in computers. This presents a problem. If a student leaves his email open on a school laptop or shares his password with the wrong people, the next day they could be sent to the Dean of Student’s office for crimes they did not commit. These bogus all-network emails also solicit “profound” and “intellectual” response sent by other students talking about how they enjoy this email network and do not want it to be ruined by these emails. This article is to present the two sides to the argument of whether there should be an all-school email address.

I first want to present the argument of taking away the email. A couple of times a month, there is always that guy that thinks he is funny and use someone’s email address to show his comedic genius. Why have an all-school email, when a quarter of the emails are dumb jokes? Another argument that has come to my attention is that a few of these emails are used to hurt other student’s reputation. This may be a small detail, but hurting a fellow Ignatian is an inexcusable offense. As long as these offenses continue, all-school emails sent by students will always be in a slight form of jeopardy

However, the all-school emails will most likely never be taken away, and there are plenty of reasons why. The joke emails are few and far between as of late, and very rarely do the emails that hurt reputations show up. I can attest that this email system has helped find lost items on a regular basis. School assignments such as surveys would be a large hassle if it weren’t for this email system, and getting news out about club activities is as simple as typing an email and clicking send.

If you take away one thing from this article, it should be that don’t take the all-school email for granted, but you shouldn’t worry about your email being taken away because someone wants to make a feminism club.
